Seven out of eight of New Zealand's universities are ranked in the world's top 500 according to major ranking reports. Such assessments are based mainly on research output. New Zealand academics are usually required to combine teaching and research. The university system is strongly integrated with Europe and academics often move to and from New Zealand.
